CITIZENS! - Here we are

Martyn, Thom, Mike, Lawrence and Tom from London are CITIZENS!
Their paths crossed at a party. Among other things, after the painful failed attempt to impress a date, they found themselves again Hearing music in the corner and created a band very foolish: CITIZENS!

'It's us against the world. We make our own rules and we take them very seriously. But it works because we do not take ourselves seriously while we do it. '

From the outset it was clear that they will throw themselves brave heart and soul into the field of pop music, but also the clearest ideas bring surprises that you can not plan: "We all live in London. It was supposed to be an impression of the different experiences of living in the city. That was the plan, but now its finished all the songs seem to be about sex I wonder what that says about us? "Said Tom.
The recordings took the band into more playful attack, asking questions do not represent the other bands were arguing over lyrics, could be mistakes and errors mixed together elements that are not properly mixed.
But the thing is, they allowed each other not certain moments of past decades to imitate.

The Evangelists in Barcelona (Palau de la Música, March 1, 2012)

Dressed in black rigorous. With a straight face, well suited to the climate of honor and respect that was felt at the Palau de la Música. As priests willing to give his sermon from sacred material. Antonio Arias, Jack, and Eric Jimenez Muñoz Florent came on stage with this proposition, running his 'Homage to Morente'. Reinterpret some of their songs, in the most heartfelt and respectful as possible, but also experimenting with sound, and your teacher would have liked.

This began to sound the first notes of 'Glory to God', with his burial, his surround reverb and oozing requiem that air from the stage to the orchestra seats. Open the fire was the turn of 'Decline', where the boys track Granada started showing the instrumental repertoire that led up to. Florent's guitar left its mark and flash planetero, while Antonio Arias fidgeted and distort their sound to create atmospheres and as personal as music. The Evangelists began, despite everything, a little cold and mechanical. The audience kept waiting for the future correction of the recital. Also, some people began to leave the room. Most of them tourists who had arrived at Palau probably hoping to find pure flamenco, to meet in the middle of the festival of drawer. But last night the coordinates were different, and Mental GPS only needed the open-mindedness as the only travel guide.

A couple of songs on autopilot up to 'In a dream you came', where the Lizard singer Nick began to warm up and seemed contagious enthusiasm (always polite) to their colleagues. The vitality and strength of Eric on drums also helped to secure it. Thus, the tone was making an appearance on stage. The tranquility and pause feature Jack and company did not prevent the public convey the excitement and wonder of working with sensitive material such as songs they saw as a teacher, as was Henry. 'Above the ordinary' and 'The joys of Henry' continued to build this tribute. Later 'The Madman' filled with electricity and a high rate stage. The Evangelists were up a couple of speed and took all the juice to this kind of experimental rock liturgical postulate. Florent fidgeted in his guitar-saw fashion, shows how it was going well. A good prelude, then, to execute the hit of the 'Tribute to Enrique Morente', as is the beautiful 'Where you put the soul "in which Jack Arias and masterfully combine their voices and skills with the strings.

Thus closed the first part of the concert. To start the encore as well, with the exciting performances of Carmen Linares and Solea Morente, who participated in this tribute playing the three songs that work on the album, and providing the atmosphere of art and flamenco posture, turning out for their sense delight of all present. We come to the second encore, which the Evangelists left a small gap to their original formations playing 'I would not look out of the gate' of Planets and the adaptation of a poem by Lorca Lizard Nick did in 'Sleepless Town'.

And thus closed a short but intense concert. Perhaps too corseted, the stage and circumstances, but high quality music and, above all, artistic. Why many of the present yesterday did not know the figure of Enrique Morente but none of them doubt and his art.

Intelligent Electro-Pop by Louis - # musicmonday No. 17

So here I am once more in the playground of the ... oh, wait, that's a different film. So, here I am again with my favorite, completely unknown # musicmonday-article series (according to hospital, Relocation, DSL free time, holidays), in which I like to imagine personal favorites from the wide world of free music.

The new year I will start with the German singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter aka Dick Ludwig and his truly remarkable EP "Koltrast" (Col ... Huh?), On the Berlin a quite catchy (well, 'catchy' in the sense of 'not too inclined'), not the less intelligent mix of non-boring electro pop / rock presents, somewhere between Radiohead and the good indie stuff of the early 1980s. "Koltrast" surprisingly good, ten produced, well played and well sung numbers, as a free download with a CC license on the already very interesting digital label Aerotone.
